My 5 Fall Must-Haves

best maternity style

Fall is my favorite season for many reasons, but especially for the fashion. I could probably go on and on about all of my essentials for this time of year, but if you’re on a budget or looking to only invest in a couple of pieces, I’m sharing my top 5 must-have investments for fall 2017. I’m sure I could interchange multiple items, like OTK boots for booties, but I’m assuming you probably have some of the basics already in your closet (cardigans, sweaters, loafers, etc.). Read on to see what made my list.

How to wear over the knee boots

Wool Coat

A wool coat for me is a no brainer. They’re chic and easy to throw on over any outfit. They keep you warm, but also elevate your look. I also like that they can transition seamlessly to winter, too. I was recently asked in my DM’s whether a reader should invest in a black, navy, or gray wool coat and my answer – choose the color that’s most dominant in your closet. Since you’re coat will most likely be an investment piece, you want it to be as versatile as possible. You want to be able to reach for it A LOT. If you have a ton of black shoes or bags in your closet, it will be a lot easier to reach for a black coat to coordinate than say, navy. Maybe your accessories closet is gray dominant, then a gray coat could easily work for you. With investment pieces, I always recommend thinking about the rest of your wardrobe before making a decision. Will you wear it enough to make it worth the price.

Hat

I talked about the pageboy/baker boy hat trend a couple weeks ago, but hats in general are super on trend for fall. You have caps, beanies, fedoras, and conductor hats – all of which I’m on board for. I’ve been a hat person from day one, but before they became popular on the fashion scene, my size was hard to come by. Luckily, with popularity came more options and more sizes. With my pregnancy, I’ve been embracing hats even more. My hair is usually good for 2 days, but by day 3, I need some help. Rather than use dry shampoo (which I hate), I throw on a hat. They’re easy, chic, and really allow you to get out of the house quick. I have a feeling hats will be my mom go-to essential, lol. I love my pageboy hat and was able to recently find a gray one in my size (crossing my fingers it fits!). I have this fedora, which I love so much and snagged the tan version that recently came back in-stock. Pricey, but the fit and style are too good.

Something Camel

Without a doubt, you need something camel in your fall wardrobe. Whether that’s a sweater, scarf, blazer, or coat I promise you’ll reach for it a ton. Camel is such a fall color and it makes any outfit feel festive and seasonal. Camel pairs well with black, white, beige, brown, navy, and even gray. Camel tends to dominate my wardrobe this time of year… I almost feel like I wear it too much, lol. But I have so many great camel coats, sweaters, and jacket it’s hard to refrain, lol.

OTK Boots

The reason I chose OTK boots over any other boot style for my fall must-haves this year is because I’m assuming you already have a pair of booties in your closet that you love. OTK boots are a little more trendy, so you may not have a pair yet. This season I’ve fallen in love with OTK boots even more so than before. Either they’ve grown on me, or I’ve realized their versatility over the years. They’re a statement piece that can easily transform an outfit. Plain and simple, they elevate your look and who doesn’t want that. You can go more casual with flat styles or go more dressy with a heeled option. They can be worn with jeans, dresses, or skirts and they look great for the holidays. I’ll be doing an OTK boot style guide in the coming weeks, so if you have a pair and are struggling with how to style them, stay tuned for that post. It will be a good one!

A Good Pair of Jeans

This seems like a given, but I can’t tell you how much wear you will get out of a good pair of jeans during this time of year. If you’re still waiting to invest in a designer pair of jeans, now’s the time. Jeans are comfortable, warm, and extremely versatile and completely worth the hefty price tag. Last year I was all about black distressed jeans (I wore my Rag & Bone distressed skinny jeans nearly every day in the fall and winter). Since I can’t wear those at the moment, I’ve been living in my maternity DL1961 jeans. I didn’t think a pair of blue jeans would be as versatile, but they’ve grown on me and I’m reaching for them A LOT. Denim tends to be the foundation for an outfit and should probably be considered the real MVP of my favorite looks. Definitely, the most versatile piece in my closet!
