I ask myself two questions before I make any purchase. Is the piece classic and timeless? and can I wear it multiple ways? If the answer is yes, it will probably end up in my closet. I don’t want to call myself the queen of remixing my wardrobe, but I sure love doing it and I don’t mind it one bit! I tend to go a little extreme when it comes to paring down my closet. Even if I love a piece and think it’s super cute, if I haven’t worn in a while or it doesn’t go well with the rest of my closet, I end up giving it away or selling it. Edit, edit, edit, and refine, refine, refine. It makes getting dressed so much easier (and you get the most out of every dollar you spend).

The great thing about having a very cohesive and refined closet is that with every new piece you add to your wardrobe, you get to reinvent some of your old favorites. Just when you think you’ve worn everything in every way, you add a new piece into the mix, and you have a handful of new outfits. I’m telling you, classics and neutrals are the best ways to expand your closet.

Speaking of remixing your wardrobe, I recently took on Target’s White Shirt Challenge. Using the classic white button down as a base, I had to create three distinctive looks using pieces from my existing closet. The white button down shirt is one of the most classic and versatile basics you can have in your closet and can serve as a base to just about any style (I could have easily created 10 looks). I went with classic and professional with a blazer and flats, simple and relaxed in boyfriend jeans and pumps, and, quintessential fall in a cable knit sweater, hat, and tall boots. I love that with one simple update, I was able to create three new-to-me outfits and was able to dust off some of my old fall favorites.

For those of you looking to update your fall wardrobe on a budget, simply incorporate classic affordable pieces into your existing closet. Not only will you save, but you can reinvent all your old favorite pieces!
