Embracing the Slip Dress

If you’ve been on Instagram or other blogs, you know slip dresses have become a thing. Because of the way they were styled in the past, I never really thought of adding them to my closet. They were more sexy, tight, and revealing, all of which are things this tomboy doesn’t relate to. But, things have changed, and it appears the basic slip dress is a classic versatile piece we could all use in our closets.

I’m pretty cautious when it comes to trends, so I waited on the slip dress until I was ready to fully embrace it. The thing I like so much about this style of dress, it’s simple silhouette. Other than the spaghetti straps, the shape of the dress is not overly feminine (which I really like). The straight up and down shape reminds of a shift dress, which is a style I’ve always liked. I also like that the longer length is more casual and everyday. Brands have really done a great job in creating a simple silhouette while still keeping it basic and easy to wear. I recently picked up this Splendid option. It’s incredibly comfortable and lays on the body nicely. It also has adjustable straps which is super convenient. The dress is still a little long on me, so I’m in the process of getting it altered. I also recently got this slip dress from Everlane. Very similar to the Splendid version, but thicker without adjustable straps. The xs runs big on me, but nothing too overwhelming. For everyone else, I want to say the dress runs TTS. They do have a shorter version, which may be more petite-friendly.

Whether you wear it by itself on a nice summer day, add a tee-shirt under to give it some style, or wear it under a cute jacket, the slip dress is a great versatile basic piece to have in your wardrobe. It can be dressed up or down and used as a blank canvas to create so many different outfits. In case you’re in the market for one, I’m sharing my favorites below.
