This post has been long overdue. I was going to write it before I purchased my first (ever) pair of Birkenstock sandals, but I think after owning two pairs now and actually wearing and styling them, I can provide better feedback. Besides all the men out there, I don’t know if all the hate the Birkenstock trend has gotten is necessarily from how ‘ugly’ they are. I think it may have more to do with what they’re associated with and how they’ve been styled in the past. I’m a big believer in the art of styling. Anything can be cute or ‘stylish’ if it’s styled right.

As with anything else you see on a blog, in a magazine, or in a J.Crew catalogue, when a piece is styled right, everyone wants in. This is exactly what happened with the return of Birks. One blogger, celebrity, or campaign styled them right and everyone wanted in. Do I think Birkenstocks can look extremely granola, hippie, and unflattering, yeah for sure. But again, when done right, I like them.

For me, Birkenstocks and denim are a match made in heaven. There’s something about the two paired together that’s very au naturel (which I love!). After months of being on the fence, I caved. And I’m glad I did. Not only are they great for my denim-dominated closet, but they’re incredibly comfortable, and so easy to slip on when you’re running out the door. They’re definitely wide and run large (I ordered a size 34 kids), so I do recommend sizing down. I was able to snag this black leather pair from Zara kids that are pretty identical to Birkenstocks and although I appreciate the sleeker look, they aren’t as comfortable.

I’ll conclude the longest Birkenstock post alive by saying, if you’re on the fence, go for it! They go with everything and they’ll be the most comfortable sandals in your closet. You’ll at least get your monies worth and most likely get a reaction out of your boyfriend or husband (which in my case was a negative one lol).

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the whole Birkenstock comeback. Do you own a pair or do you hate them?

I agree. I think anything can look good if styled right. I’ve been on the fence about Birks too. Before they made a comeback, I always thought they were just the ugliest shoes on the planet…like comparable to Crocs. But now after seeing so many people styling them in cute ways, I’ve changed my mind and ha’ve been looking at getting a pair of my own. I’m all about being cute and comfortable when it comes to shoes!

Love all the striped shirts! What size did you get in the Target stripe tee?

I got a small. The tee runs a bit small and tight, so I sized up!

Somehow you’re managing to make the Birks look cute. I’ve never been a fan, not even in college. I kind of turned my nose uo to them. But I think my opinion of them has changed over the years. Not sure if I’m ready to purchase a pair, but I’m getting closer.Thank you for pushing me one step….

Lol. great post. It’s funny bc I swore I would never wear them, but now that I’m seeing them styled so chic everywhere….I’m considering it. I love all the outfits you put together including Birks, and they look awesome on you in every look. You may be winning me over to the Birk side.

I agree totally. A lot of people were unsure at first about this trend, but when it comes down to comfort, I’m all for it! xo Hayley dailydoseofdarling.com

Love how you styled these birks. Your style reminds me a lot of Julie Sarinana, of Sincerely Jules.

At first I didn’t know how to feel about the birkenstock trend but I’ve gotten used to it and begun to like them again. I used to wear these a lot like six years ago and they actually go with a lot like you’ve shown in this post :) x

I’ve been wearing the same pair of Birks since 2000 or 2001, so it’s kind of funny to me that they are making a comeback now! I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of mine and have had them re-soled twice. They make my size 5 feet look large, but they are so comfy.
By the way, thank you for featuring the striped Target tee! I bought one after I saw it on your site and I love it. I do agree that it runs small.
