This post has been long overdue. I was going to write it before I purchased my first (ever) pair of Birkenstock sandals, but I think after owning two pairs now and actually wearing and styling them, I can provide better feedback. Besides all the men out there, I don’t know if all the hate the Birkenstock trend has gotten is necessarily from how ‘ugly’ they are. I think it may have more to do with what they’re associated with and how they’ve been styled in the past. I’m a big believer in the art of styling. Anything can be cute or ‘stylish’ if it’s styled right.

As with anything else you see on a blog, in a magazine, or in a J.Crew catalogue, when a piece is styled right, everyone wants in. This is exactly what happened with the return of Birks. One blogger, celebrity, or campaign styled them right and everyone wanted in. Do I think Birkenstocks can look extremely granola, hippie, and unflattering, yeah for sure. But again, when done right, I like them.

For me, Birkenstocks and denim are a match made in heaven. There’s something about the two paired together that’s very au naturel (which I love!). After months of being on the fence, I caved. And I’m glad I did. Not only are they great for my denim-dominated closet, but they’re incredibly comfortable, and so easy to slip on when you’re running out the door. They’re definitely wide and run large (I ordered a size 34 kids), so I do recommend sizing down. I was able to snag this black leather pair from Zara kids that are pretty identical to Birkenstocks and although I appreciate the sleeker look, they aren’t as comfortable.

I’ll conclude the longest Birkenstock post alive by saying, if you’re on the fence, go for it! They go with everything and they’ll be the most comfortable sandals in your closet. You’ll at least get your monies worth and most likely get a reaction out of your boyfriend or husband (which in my case was a negative one lol).

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the whole Birkenstock comeback. Do you own a pair or do you hate them?
