Madewell Denim

I’ve been on a mission as of late to find all the cropped flare denim out there. I have plenty, but for some reason I continue to search. Maybe, I haven’t found the perfect pair yet? I’ve recently become addicted to Madewell jeans. Ever since they started carrying size 23, I’ve been stalking their site to check out new styles. The price point alone keeps me coming back. Have you tried Madewell denim? They’re on the thinner side, but are super stretchy and comfortable. The only reason I don’t have every pair, all their jeans run really long, so I end up having to cut them (which, is probably a sign not to buy them lol).

Madewell white cropped flare jeans

S H O P  T H E  P O S T :

I was at Madewell last month and one of the sales associates was wearing the white cali-demi boot jeans and I fell in love. They looked amazing on her and from the looks of it, she didn’t seem too much taller than me (she did tell me she cut about an 1” off the length). They didn’t have my size in-store, so we ended up ordering a pair from another store. Once they arrived, I knew I had to shorten the length. The rips also don’t land exactly on my knees, but for this short girl, that’s never a deal breaker. The fit alone had me sold. Although the rise was higher than I thought, the 23 fit like a glove. Best part, and something you normally have to worry about with white jeans, they’re not see-through! I am bummed that my DIY hem made the flare not as noticeable, but I’ll live.

I also bought the 9” high-rise black skinny jeans in a size 23 (knowing I would need to cut some length off). I thought they were super flattering when I tried them on in-store and even when I wear them. However, I don’t think they photograph as well (wah, wah). The rips land on my knees, which is always a bonus, and they’re so ridiculously comfortable. I think the fact that they’re not as tight on my calves and ankles is where they’re throwing me off.

Last weekend I tried on the 9” high-rise skinny crop jeans (seen here). The cropped length hit at my ankle, but since it wasn’t very tapered, they weren’t flattering (keep in mind I was trying on a size up since they didn’t have my size in-store). For anyone interested in these, they’re darker in-person than they appear online.

And lastly, the cali-demi boot with the chewed-hem. I saw the same sales associate from above in these and again, they looked amazing on her. She said they ran shorter than the white cali-demi boot jeans, so they may be perfect for us petites. I’m debating whether or not I should order them. The wash is perfect for spring the I’m digging the exposed buttons. I don’t want to have to cut up another pair of jeans… maybe I should order them, and if they’re too long, I can show some restraint and just return them lol. I’m a crazy denim hoarder, though…

Hey Madewell, you have regular and tall denim sizes, maybe you should start carrying short or petite? Just a thought…

  • My local Madewell does hemming for free. Not sure if they all do. I’ve had some of mine done & they came out great. May be an option for some styles.

  • The madewell I frequent in Chicago offers hemming service, so I haven’t had an issue with length. Love their jeans!

    • They offer it here in Portland as well, but for some reason, didn’t think of using it. I’ve been cutting my jeans for so many years, it didn’t even cross my mind. I may have to get it a try.

  • I went through a big denim phase several years ago when I dressed more casual at work. I don’t have as much as you, but I’m guessing I have 20+ pairs. When I wore them all the time this seemed totally reasonable! Now, I’m not so sure. Anyhow, when you cut your own jeans at the bottom, do you need to reinforce the seams down the legs at all? Does that stitching come loose? Thanks!

    • I’ve been cutting my jeans for years and I haven’t had any issues with seams coming down or unraveled. Since I have so many pairs, I tend to rotate them as much as possible. That plus washing them less probably helps.

  • I love Madewell denim. So comfy and holds its shape really well between washing. I’m totally with you (110%) with an option for petite/short folks! I actually just shot a tweet out to them a week or so ago, asking if they were planning on releasing other inseam options any time soon. They replied, but it wasn’t what I wanted to hear–they said they had no plans, BUT made sure to mention their free hemming services. I have rather short legs, so even after having my pants altered, they still don’t look quite right with regular sizing. C’mon, Madewell! Help a girl out!

    • Yes, I completely agree! Even with a hem, they’re still a little off for petite girls. Come on, Madewell! Good for you for reaching out to them. Maybe if enough of us do it, they’ll reconsider.

    • Good to hear! I don’t hear a ton of people talk about Madewell denim, but after trying them, I knew I couldn’t be the only one who thought they were great.

  • I do love Madewell denim! I have to get tall unless I want an ankle jean. LOL. I’ve got the obsession with Levi’s….the stalking and looking for more even though I don’t need more jeans sounds very familiar.
I love those heels! So perfect. And, I have that camel blazer from Banana…love it!
Hope you have a fabulous weekend and I can’t wait to see your round up on Monday!
    XO! Gina

    • Dang, I didn’t realize you were that tall lol (jealous). Levi’s are doing it to me as well. It’s getting bad!

  • I love Madewell denim—it’s my favorite hands down! But I do sometimes wish the skinny fit was more slim along the calves and at the ankles like you said. I should try premium denim to see if there’s a brand that fits me like that because I think it looks so clean, but I have somewhat muscular calves so it might be difficult to find. (Is there a brand that fits that way on you?) I really love the look of the white distressed flare jeans! I need to invest in more versatile pairs right now (like a nice black pair) but those have been on my mind since they came out haha.

    • The struggle is real! I love my Rag & Bone distressed skinny jeans. Tight in all the right places, but not suffocating. I actually just ordered 2 pairs of skinny jeans from Abercrombie & Fitch and they fit extremely well (at a great price point as well). I also have been really into straight and cropped flare jeans, so I haven’t bought that many skinny jeans lately.

  • I love just about anything from Madewell; but, the denim is perfection. Such great quality and fit and a great price point! I actually just got that bomber sweater, too. It’s super cute and cozy!

  • I’m 5′ tall and the cali demi-boot jeans: chewed-hem edition fits me perfectly, no hemming needed. It felt like wearing yoga pants, hugged my legs and hips at the right places and bending over was no problem at all due to a good amount of stretch in their jeans.

  • I worked at Madewell during my undergrad and became addicted to their denim.. it was dangerous! Haha! Next time you go in definitely try to Demi boot chewed hem, they’re the most comfortable jeans ever!!! I recently ordered the Perfect summer jeans, I heard a lot of good things about them.

    • Good to know. The cropped raw hem in my size are backordered until May (I should have never waited). I think I’m going to call into the store to see if they can track a pair down.
