6 Tips to Styling your Family Holiday Photos

This is one of my favorite posts to date. I know I’m a little late on getting it posted (I’m sure you already took your holiday photos), but if you’re still trying to get you holiday photos organized, I hope this post helps you. You could also use my tips for any family photoshoots, really. I love styling Mike and now I get to do my whole family and I can’t even lie, I love doing it! To be honest, I haven’t put too much thought into our photos as a family, it all just comes together. I think that’s what happens when you’re family’s entire wardrobe is neutrals. There’s endless possibilities and everything pairs well together, naturally.

Below, I’m sharing 5 tips to help you get the best styled family photos and also showing you 3 different looks – dressed up, casual with a pop of color, and outdoors. All 3 looks include options for mom, dad, baby girl, and brother. Remember, my tips apply to any photoshoot, not just for the holidays.

6 Tips to Styling your Family Holiday Photos

1. Base your outfits on a color scheme – pick 3-4 colors and intermix it with everyone’s outfits. You can use different shades of the same color – don’t be too picky.
2. Go for classics rather than trends – You want these photos to be timeless. You want to look back at the card/photo and remember the memories of the year and not just think about your outfit.
3. Include layers and play with textures – Beanies, leggings, shirts under sweaters for example. This adds dimension and interest. It also makes the overall look of the photo more sophisticated and elevated.
4. Don’t be so literal with your choices – everyone does flannels and red for the holidays. Why do you want your photos to look like everyone else’s? Instead of picking the obvious choices, go with a pop of red, a pop of plaid, or even go neutrals all together.
5. Don’t go too matchy, matchy – Instead of thinking you need to match, think about how you can blend. Mom and daughter don’t need to wear the same print, in fact nobody needs to wear the same print.
6. Create a mood board – Use Pinterest! This will help you visualize and see how each outfit works with one another.
